Is a principal a man of principles?

Some words can be used either as nouns or as adjectives.

Principal is a noun when it refers to:

  • A sum of money: He gets a good interest on his principal.
  • The leader of a school: The principal dismissed the head of the English Department.

  • It is an adjective when it is used as a modifier meaning main, leading, first in rank: the principal subject for debate was the question of peace or war.

But the word principle should never be used as an adjective. It is always a noun.
